Pico Cão Grande
São Tomé's signature landmark, a volcanic tower rising straight out of the rainforest.
Pico Cão Grande is the needle of rock that climbs about 370 metres above the southern forest, the single most recognisable sight on the island. Almost no one climbs it. The reward is the approach: the roads and trails through Obô open up the postcard angles of the spire framed by jungle and cloud. Pair it with a forest walk for a full day in the wild interior.

What are the must-see attractions in São Tomé and Príncipe?+
The Roça plantations (Monte Café, Diogo Vaz, Água-Izé) are the country's signature cultural attractions. Pico Cão Grande viewpoint and Obô National Park define the natural drama. Lagoa Azul offers the country's best snorkeling, while Ilhéu das Rolas marks the equator. Most travelers cover 4 to 6 attractions across a week-long stay.
What is a Roça in São Tomé?+
A Roça is a historic colonial-era plantation estate. From the 19th century into the early 20th, São Tomé became the world's largest exporter of cacao. The Roças housed plantation workers, processing facilities, and the owner's manor. Many are now restored as hotels, museums, or working visitor estates.
Do I need a guide?+
Most attractions can be visited independently with a rental car or driver. Obô National Park hikes require certified guides. Roça visits are richer with a local guide who can explain the heritage. We connect you with vetted English and Portuguese-speaking guides.
Is Ilhéu das Rolas worth the trip?+
Yes if you want to stand on the equator. Ilhéu das Rolas is a small island off São Tomé's south coast, reachable by a short boat ride. The equator monument is the main draw, but the island also has good snorkeling and a small all-inclusive resort. Plan a half-day or stay overnight.
How much does it cost to visit a Roça?+
Most Roças charge €5 to €15 for a guided tour. Some include tasting (cacao at Diogo Vaz, coffee at Monte Café). Cloçon Téla in São Tomé city offers bean-to-bar chocolate tastings. Entry to Obô National Park is around €10 plus guide fees.
When is the best time to visit?+
Dry season (June to September, December to February) is best for hiking, snorkeling, and outdoor attractions. The gravana rainy season (March to May, October to November) means greener landscapes and fewer crowds. Roça visits work year-round.
