Why It Matters

One of São Tomé's most respected modern chocolate operations.

Roça Diogo Vaz combines São Tomé’s centuries-old cacao tradition with contemporary bean-to-bar production techniques. The estate’s chocolate is exported to specialist chocolatiers across Europe and North America, giving travelers the chance to taste the source product before it ever reaches retail. The visitor experience is built around education and tasting, not just observation.

What is Roça Diogo Vaz?

Roça Diogo Vaz is a working organic cacao plantation producing single-origin chocolate that’s exported to specialist chocolatiers across Europe and North America.

Unlike the larger heritage roças (Monte Café, Água-Izé) which preserve colonial-era plantation architecture, Diogo Vaz is a working modern operation with tour facilities specifically designed for visitors. You’ll see the cacao trees, the fermentation and drying process, and the chocolate production line, and taste the finished product at every stage.

A typical visit includes a plantation walk, production tour, and guided tasting. Workshops for hands-on chocolate making can be arranged in advance. The on-site shop sells single-origin bars, drinking chocolate, cacao nibs, and other products at producer prices.

How to visit Roça Diogo Vaz

How to get there

Roça Diogo Vaz is on São Tomé’s northwest coast, approximately 25-30 minutes from Morro Peixe or 30 minutes from Mucumbli. From São Tomé city the drive is about 1 hour via paved roads through Morro Peixe and along the northwest coast. Book tours in advance, visits are scheduled, not drop-in.

When to go

Tours run year-round. Harvest seasons (typically October-November and April-May) offer the chance to see fresh cacao processing if your timing aligns. Otherwise the production facility operates daily, and you’ll always see chocolate making in progress.

What to bring

Cash or card for chocolate purchases (the shop is excellent), a camera, closed-toe walking shoes for the plantation tour, water, and a light layer (the production facility is cool). Leave room in your bag, you’ll want to buy chocolate at source prices.

What to expect

A typical visit includes a plantation walk (seeing the trees, fermentation boxes, drying tables), a production tour (roasting, winnowing, conching, molding), and a guided tasting of multiple chocolate percentages and styles. Workshops for hands-on chocolate making can be arranged in advance. The on-site shop sells single-origin bars, drinking chocolate, cacao nibs, and other products at producer prices.

Insider Tip from São Tomé Life

Combine Diogo Vaz with a north-coast day trip: Praia dos Tamarindos (beach) → Lagoa Azul (snorkeling) → Roça Diogo Vaz (chocolate tour and tasting). Stay at Mucumbli or EcoResort for easy access. Book the chocolate-making workshop if you have a few hours, it’s far more memorable than a standard tour. The estate’s 70% dark single-origin bar is the signature product; buy several for gifts.

Roça Diogo Vaz is a working organic cacao plantation on São Tomé’s northwest coast that produces single-origin chocolate exported to specialist chocolatiers worldwide. How do I visit Roça Diogo Vaz?

What’s the difference between Diogo Vaz and other São Tomé chocolate?

Diogo Vaz is a contemporary single-origin organic operation producing for export to specialist chocolatiers. Cloçon Téla Chocolate (in São Tomé city) is a smaller boutique bean-to-bar producer focused on the local market and tourism. Both are excellent; Cloçon Téla is the smarter pick for travelers based in the city.

Is Roça Diogo Vaz worth visiting?

Yes, particularly for travelers interested in food, agriculture, or chocolate specifically. The combination of plantation walk, production tour, and tasting delivers genuine bean-to-bar context that’s increasingly rare globally. Best paired with a north-coast itinerary including Praia dos Tamarindos and Lagoa Azul.

Where should I stay to visit Roça Diogo Vaz?

Mucumbli (Italian eco-lodge, ~30 min) or EcoResorTamarino (Praia dos Tamarindos, ~25-30 min) are the closest options on the northwest coast. From São Tomé city the drive is 1 hour, possible as a day trip but less convenient.
