São Tomé Trip Basics
How far in advance should I start planning a São Tomé trip?+
Three to six months is comfortable. Flights from Lisbon on TAP are limited and prices climb close to dates. Príncipe lodges and the best Roça stays book out months ahead in high season. If you are aiming for August or December to February, plan early.
What is the best time of year to visit São Tomé and Príncipe?+
Two dry seasons each year. The long one runs June to September. The short one runs mid-December to February. June to September is peak travel. December to February is quieter and just as warm. The wet seasons still see plenty of clear days, often the most dramatic skies.
Do I need a visa?+
Most EU, US, UK, and Schengen-area passport holders can visit visa-free for stays up to 15 days. For longer trips, an e-visa is straightforward and approved within days. Always check your specific passport rules before booking flights.
Are these itineraries customizable?+
Yes. These four trips are starting points, not packages. Most travellers mix elements: a long weekend with one extra night, a classic week with two nights at a single Roça. Message us and we will help you adjust the timing, the hotels, the pace.
Can I really see São Tomé in a long weekend?+
Three nights is tight but workable for one island. You will see São Tomé well, you will not see Príncipe. The Long Weekend is the right trip if your schedule will not bend. The Classic Week is what we recommend if you can stretch it.
Should I visit both islands or just São Tomé?+
Both, if you have seven nights or more. Príncipe is the country quieter, wilder half. Declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, almost entirely jungle, with three beaches that look like postcards. São Tomé is bigger, more reachable, more Roças. If you only have time for one, São Tomé wins on logistics.

When to Go
São Tomé sits one degree north of the equator. Warm year round, around 24 to 30°C. The seasons that matter are wet and dry. Here is how the year actually shapes up.
JUN to SEP
Peak Dry Season
The classic peak. Driest skies, easiest driving, clearest mountain views. Best for hiking, plantation visits, full island loops. Príncipe lodges fill up fastest. Book three to six months ahead.
MID-DEC to FEB
Short Dry Season
Quieter than peak, equally warm. Sea turtle nesting peaks November to February at Praia Jalé. Holiday travel from Portugal lifts demand around Christmas and New Year. Good window for a first-timer trip.
MAR to MAY · OCT to MID-DEC
Wet Seasons
Tropical wet, not monsoon. Rain often comes in short afternoon bursts, not all-day washouts. Skies are dramatic, jungle is at its greenest, hotel rates drop. Cocoa harvest peaks. The off-season traveller wins on price and quiet.
Sea turtle nesting: October to March. Whale watching (humpbacks): July to October.
