Why It Matters

One of few places worldwide where the Equator can be experienced on dry land.

The Equator (0° latitude) runs through Ilhéu das Rolas, marked by a monument (Marco do Equador) where visitors can stand with one foot in each hemisphere. Most of the planet’s equatorial line crosses ocean, jungle, or inaccessible terrain, São Tomé and Príncipe is one of the rare countries where the line meets a small inhabited island accessible to visitors. That makes it a genuine geographic bucket-list experience.

What is Ilhéu das Rolas?

Ilhéu das Rolas is a small island off the southern tip of São Tomé where the Equator literally crosses the land, marked by a monument where visitors can stand with one foot in each hemisphere.

Beyond the geographic novelty, the island has excellent beaches, snorkeling, and short hiking trails. It’s small enough to explore fully in a day. The previously-operating Pestana Equador resort on the island closed during COVID and has not reopened, currently there’s no European-standard accommodation directly on Ilhéu das Rolas, so most visitors come as a day trip from southern São Tomé.

The Equator marker is a short walk from the boat landing. The beaches around the island are clear-water swimming and snorkeling spots, with calm conditions in good weather.

How to visit Ilhéu das Rolas

How to get there

Access is by boat from Porto Alegre (Ponta Baleia) on the southern tip of São Tomé Island. The scheduled boat typically departs at 10:30 AM and returns at 4:30 PM; private transfers can be arranged for different timings. Porto Alegre itself is approximately 1.5-2 hours by car from São Tomé city, so plan an early start, or better, stay at Praia Inhame Eco Lodge or Pousada Roça São João dos Angolares the night before to be closer to the departure.

When to go

Dry season (June-September) for the calmest sea conditions and most reliable boat crossings. Wet season can produce rough seas that cancel boat departures. Mid-morning to mid-afternoon is the typical day-trip window, sunset returns are not standard.

What to bring

Swimwear and towel, reef-safe sunscreen, snorkel gear (or rent on the island), water and snacks (limited on-island options since Pestana closed), cash in euros or dobras, and a passport copy for the Equator photo. Bring more food and water than you think you need.

What to expect

The classic Ilhéu das Rolas experience involves the Equator marker photo, beach time, and snorkeling in clear waters around the island. With Pestana Equador closed, on-island infrastructure is limited, bring everything you need for the day. The marker is a short walk from the boat landing. Other beaches require longer walks or boat access depending on the cove.

Insider Tip from São Tomé Life

Plan the Ilhéu das Rolas day around the boat schedule, not your preferred timing, it’s the binding constraint. Stay at Praia Inhame Eco Lodge the night before; you’ll be 30 minutes from the boat departure rather than 1.5+ hours from the city. Combine the day with Boca do Inferno and a south-coast beach for a complete southern itinerary. Bring more food and water than you think you need.
