São Tomé & Príncipe: Your Questions

Where is São Tomé and Príncipe?+
São Tomé and Príncipe is a two-island nation in the Gulf of Guinea, off the west coast of Central Africa. The islands sit roughly 250 km off the coast of Gabon, with São Tomé as the larger southern island and Príncipe as the smaller northern one.
Is São Tomé safe for tourists?+
Yes. São Tomé and Príncipe is one of the safest countries in Africa. Violent crime is rare, locals are welcoming, and tourists can move freely day or night. Standard travel precautions still apply. Secure valuables, use reputable drivers, and don't leave belongings unattended at beaches.
When is the best time to visit?+
The dry season runs June to September and is the best window for beaches, hikes, and outdoor exploration. A shorter dry spell happens in January–February. The wet season (October–May) brings lush green landscapes and fewer visitors, with brief heavy rains rather than constant downpours.
How do I get to São Tomé?+
The main entry point is São Tomé International Airport (TMS). Direct flights connect from Lisbon (TAP Air Portugal, the most common route), Accra (Ghana), and Luanda (Angola). Most travelers transit via Lisbon. There are no direct flights from North America; connect through Europe.
Do I need a visa?+
Most European Union, US, UK, and Schengen-area passport holders can enter visa-free for short stays (typically 15 days) or obtain a visa on arrival. Citizens of other countries should check the São Tomé and Príncipe consulate website before booking. Bring a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates.
What's there to do?+
São Tomé and Príncipe offers dramatic volcanic scenery (the Pico Cão Grande spire and the climbable Pico de São Tomé), pristine and uncrowded beaches (Praia Jalé, Praia Banana, Praia dos Tamarindos, Praia Inhame), working cocoa and coffee plantations (roças like Monte Café and Diogo Vaz), boat trips to Ilhéu das Rolas at the equator, and authentic Portuguese-Creole cuisine. The islands suit travelers seeking nature, history, and quiet over nightlife.
What currency is used and is cash king?+
The local currency is the São Tomé and Príncipe dobra (STN). Cash is king. Credit cards are accepted only at major hotels (Pestana, Sundy Praia, Omali) and a small number of restaurants in the capital. ATMs are limited across the islands, so it's best to exchange money beforehand. Bring euros or US dollars, and plan to carry cash for most transactions outside hotels.
How do I get around the island?+
The most practical option is hiring a private driver for the day (typically €60–100/day for a 4×4 with driver-guide). Taxis exist in the capital but are scarce in rural areas. Car rentals are possible but roads can be rough and signage limited. Public minibuses run between towns but aren't tourist-friendly. We recommend booking a driver through the concierge for any day out of the capital.
