The Plan
One main thing per part of the day. Extras below if you want them. Move it all around to suit your weather, your energy, your mood. The plan is a suggestion, not a schedule.
When to run this trip
Any seven nights work. The best windows align the Roça São João lunch on a weekday (Tuesday to Friday is ideal). Bookings are essential. Avoid Mondays for the National Museum in the capital. A Saturday to Saturday window matches typical TAP flight scheduling out of Lisbon.
ARRIVAL · ONE BLOCK
Arrive Easy
TAP from Lisbon lands São Tomé in the early evening. The airport is fifteen minutes from the capital. The first night is about settling in, not seeing things.
Land, settle, walk, dinner
Customs is quick at the small single-terminal airport. Drop your bags at the hotel, shower off the flight, walk to Praça da Independência along the seafront. Dinner at any relaxed restaurant nearby. Calulu, grilled fresh fish, or a simple plate of rice and beans with a cold Rosema beer. Early night.
IF YOUR FLIGHT IS DELAYED
TAP flights from Lisbon occasionally arrive after 9 PM. If that happens to you, skip the walk and head straight to the hotel restaurant. The week absorbs a late arrival without breaking.
CAPITAL · CULTURE
City Walking + Monte Café Plantation
Capital in the morning while the light is soft. Lunch in town. Afternoon at Roça Monte Café for the cocoa story and chef Joao Carlos Silva tasting at Sundy's table. Back to the capital for an easy evening.
Capital walking tour (~3 hrs)
Old town, Praça da Independência, the cathedral, Mercado Municipal, then up to Forte de São Sebastião for the National Museum. Doable on foot. Bring water.
Lunch in the capital (~1 hr)
Pirata or Vila do Mar for sit-down. Or the seafood carts near the seafront if you want quick. Most travellers underestimate the depth of São Tomé food here.
Roça Monte Café (~3 hrs incl. drive)
Drive 40 minutes into the interior hills. The most photogenic plantation on the island, with the cocoa-drying yards, the old factory, and the chef Joao Carlos Silva tasting menu at Sundy's table on the property. A working roça with deep history.
Return to capital, light dinner
Back by sundown. Casual dinner near the hotel. The day was full; the night is short.
If you have time
- →Morning · Sé Cathedral, 10 minutes between the praça and the market.
- →Late afternoon · Stop at Cloçon Téla Chocolate in the capital for a workshop tasting before dinner.
- →Anytime · CACAU Cultural Hub for contemporary São Tomé art, 20 minutes if open.
THE NORTH LOOP · ~120 KM
Plantations, Snorkel, Cocoa
A full day moving counter-clockwise around the north. Sea time at midday, plantation in the afternoon. Most of the drive is on EN1, the coastal road. Well-paved, light traffic.
Lagoa Azul (~2 hrs)
The Blue Lagoon. A small cove with calm, clear water and a tiny lighthouse on the headland. Best snorkel spot on the north coast. Bring or rent gear. Go early before clouds gather and tour buses arrive.
Praia das Conchas (~1.5 hrs)
Shell beach with calm bay, informal lunch from beachside grills. The kind of beach lunch you remember.
Roça Água-Izé or Roça Diogo Vaz (~1.5 hrs)
Pick one working plantation for the return. Água-Izé is the larger heritage estate; Diogo Vaz has the more polished factory tour and tasting. Both worth it. Both close earlier on Sundays.
Return to capital for dinner
Long-ish drive back, around 90 minutes. Easy dinner.
WEATHER NOTE
North coast wind picks up midday. Get to Lagoa Azul early. If clouds threaten, swap the order: do the plantation in the morning, beach in the afternoon when the sun returns.
If you have time
- →Morning · Stop at the Santa Catarina tunnel, the 30-second photo on the way north.
- →Anytime · Praia dos Tamarinos swim if time allows, a quiet beach east of Lagoa Azul.
REST · OR FLEX SOUTH
Free Day or Pico Cão Grande Flex
A built-in rest day in the middle of the week. Sleep in. Beach. Capital wandering. Or use it to preview the south with a Pico Cão Grande viewpoint drive. Your call.
If you have time
- →Half-day · Drive to the Pico Cão Grande viewpoint, around 3 hours round trip from the capital. Stop at Cascata São Nicolau on the way back.
- →Afternoon · Start of the Obô National Park forest trails, an easy 2-hour walk from the capital.
- →Anytime · Beach time at Praia Lagarto or capital wandering, market, an unhurried meal.
- →Late afternoon · Sunset boat trip out of the capital harbour, around 2-3 hours.
TRANSIT · CAPITAL TO SOUTH
Drive South + Settle In
Pack up the capital base. Drive south down the east coast. Stops along the way. Arrive at the south base by mid-afternoon for an easy evening.
Check out, drive south (~2 hrs)
Coastal road south past Praia Emília and Praia Pesqueira. Stop where it pleases you. The road follows the water most of the way.
Lunch en route (~1 hr)
Easy lunch at a beachside lodge or a roadside grill. Slow pace, you have time today.
Pico Cão Grande viewpoint + Cascata São Nicolau (~2 hrs)
The Pico from the south road is the better view. Photo stop. Cascata São Nicolau waterfall has a short trail to the plunge pool, swim if it has been a hot drive.
Settle in, dinner at the south base
Roça São João, Praia Inhame, or Jalé depending on your choice. Most south properties do dinner on site; check in, unpack, eat where you sleep.
ROAD CONDITIONS
The east coast road south is paved but narrower than the north. Allow more time than the map suggests. A 4×4 handles the spur road to Jalé much better than a compact.
SOUTH · CULTURE + BEACH
Roça São João + Southern Beaches
Slow morning at the base. Lunch is the cultural anchor of the week, the chef Joao Carlos Silva tasting menu at Roça São João dos Angolares. Afternoon and evening on the southern beaches.
Slow at the base, light beach time
Breakfast unhurried. A short walk or swim near the property. Save energy for the long lunch.
Roça São João dos Angolares (~3 hrs)
Chef Joao Carlos Silva tasting menu. Nine courses of São Tomé food at one of the most refined tables in West Africa. Book ahead, lunch only, one seating at 1 PM. The reason most travellers come south.
Boca do Inferno + Praia Jalé (~3 hrs)
Boca do Inferno is a 10-minute stop for the dramatic coastal blowhole. Then 30 minutes south to Praia Jalé, the quietest of the southern beaches. Swim, walk, do nothing.
Sunset at Praia Inhame or back at base
If the south base is Roça São João, sunset on the property terrace. If it is Praia Inhame, sunset on the beach.
TURTLE NESTING (Nov-Mar)
If you visit between October and March, Praia Jalé runs guided turtle-watching at night. The Jalé Ecolodge organises it. Worth staying late or booking a night there to see it.
If you have time
- →Morning · Praia Piscina swim if conditions allow, a sheltered swimming bay near the south base.
- →Late afternoon · Boca do Inferno coastal walk if you want more time on foot, 45 minutes.
LAST FULL DAY · YOUR CHOICE
Obô Jungle Hike or Ilhéu das Rolas Equator Day
Two flavours for your last full day. Pick by mood and weather. Both are full-day experiences. Both deliver a São Tomé memory you keep.
Choice A · Jungle
Obô National Park guided hike (~4-5 hrs)
Guided rainforest walk into the heart of the island. Bird life, endemic flora, waterfalls. Choose the difficulty with your guide. The Lagoa Amélia loop or the Bom Successo trail are the most travelled.
Late lunch and rest at the south base
Decompress. The hike is the day.
Final dinner at the south base
Last evening of the trip. Slow.
Choice B · Equator
Boat to Ilhéu das Rolas (~30 min)
Short boat crossing from Ponta Baleia. The islet sits on the equator.
Equator monument + lunch on the islet (~2 hrs)
Stand with one foot in each hemisphere, take the photo, slow lunch at the resort restaurant.
Snorkeling and beach time (~2 hrs)
Best snorkeling on the south side. Reef fish, clear water. Beach until the return boat.
Return to base, final dinner
Boat back across to the main island, then dinner.
If you have time
- →Both choices · Book ahead. Obô hike requires a guide. Rolas boat fills up on dry-season weekends.
- →Bad weather option · Swap to a slow southern beach day. Praia Inhame, Praia Jalé, lunch wherever. The trip absorbs it.
DEPARTURE · SLOW MORNING
Slow Morning, Return to Airport
Your TAP flight back to Lisbon is in the evening. Most of the day is yours. Spend it where you are, not rushing back.
Slow breakfast, packing, beach moment (~2 hrs)
Last swim. Last coffee on the terrace. Last walk on the property. Pack at your own pace.
Drive to airport (~1.5 hrs)
Drop the rental car or have the driver bring you. Return through the east coast road. Allow more time than you think.
Departure
TAP back to Lisbon departs São Tomé around 10 PM. Arrive at the airport two hours early. The international terminal is small and slow. Buy a last passion fruit juice in the departures hall.
If you have time
- →Morning · Final stop at Cloçon Téla Chocolate on the way north for chocolate to bring home.
- →Anytime · A quick swim at Praia das Conchas 45 minutes from the airport.

Getting Around
Seven nights, two bases, multiple day trips. A vehicle is essential for this trip. A 4×4 is recommended for the south coast spur roads.

Toyota Hilux 4×4

Browse rental cars →PREFER NOT TO DRIVE?
Hire a Driver
Add a local driver for around €60-80 per day on top of the vehicle. They know the routes, the lunch spots, the road conditions. Worth it for a full week of driving. Drivers double as informal guides for plantation visits and viewpoints.
Message on WhatsApp →QUICK DRIVING NOTES
- →Drive on the right, EU-style licenses accepted.
- →Petrol stations are common in the capital, sparse on the south coast. Fill up before transit days.
- →Speeds are slow, 40-60 km/h on most roads. The capital-to-south transit takes 2.5-3 hours of pure driving.
- →Offline maps are safer than relying on signal (Maps.me, Google Maps offline).
- →For week-long rentals, ask the partner about weekly rates. Often 10-15% off daily.

Practical Notes
Currency
Dobra (STN). Euros widely accepted in tourism. Cards work at major hotels, cash for everything else. A week needs more cash on hand than a long weekend, withdraw on day one.
Language
Portuguese is official. English is limited outside upscale hotels. A few Portuguese phrases go far across a week. Forro creole is widely spoken too.
Visa
Visa-free 15 days for most EU, US, UK, Schengen passport holders. A week falls well within this. E-visa available for longer stays.
Voltage
220V, type C and F plugs (standard European). Bring an adapter from US, UK, or Australia.
Water
Tap water is not safe to drink. Bottled water everywhere, around €0.50 per litre. Carry a refillable bottle and refill from larger jugs where possible.
Mobile data
CST Telecom or Unitel SIM at the airport, around €10 for the week with 10-15 GB. Alternative: Airalo eSIM before arrival. 4G in cities, patchy in the south.
Tipping
Not standard, always appreciated. 5-10% at restaurants. For drivers and guides on a week-long trip, €5-10 per day or a lump sum at the end works.
QUESTIONS · ANSWERED
About This Trip
Is seven days enough to see São Tomé?+
Yes for São Tomé Island. Seven nights lets you cover the capital, the north coast, the southern beaches, and the interior plantations without rushing. Príncipe needs its own trip. If you want both islands, see the Both Islands Slow itinerary at ten nights.
Should I add Príncipe to a seven-day trip?+
We would not. Príncipe deserves at least three full days and the inter-island flight eats a half day each way. Stretching seven nights across both leaves both islands feeling thin. If Príncipe matters, choose Both Islands Slow at ten nights, or do the Classic Week now and come back for Príncipe later.
Do I need to rent a car for a full week?+
We recommend it. Public transport is limited outside the capital and most of what makes this trip worth a week is reaching beaches, plantations, and interior viewpoints with no regular service. Daily rates are €50-95 depending on the vehicle. A 4×4 is recommended for the south coast roads. Hire a driver if you prefer not to drive yourself.
What is the best month for a Classic Week trip?+
June through September is the long dry season and the most reliable window. December through February is the short dry season and quieter on the hotel front. October-November and March-May are wet seasons but still have plenty of clear days. Humpback whales offshore July-October. Turtle nesting at Praia Jalé November-March.
Can I do this trip without moving bases?+
Yes but you would miss something. Staying in the capital the whole week means long round-trip drives to the south every day, and you never settle into the rhythm of the southern coast. Two bases adds one transit day and removes four round trips. If a single base is required, we would recommend staying in the south and doing the north loop as one long day trip.
How much should I budget for a seven-day trip?+
Budget travellers can do the week for around €700-900 per person excluding flights (basic hotels, rental car, meals out, one or two tours). Mid-range is €1,400-1,800 per person. Luxury (Omali plus Roça São João plus driver plus tours) starts around €2,800 per person and goes up from there.
What if I want more beach time?+
Easy adjustment. The southern coast (Praia Jalé, Praia Inhame, Boca do Inferno area) is where the best beach days happen. Swap the Obô hike on Day 7 for an extra beach day. Or shift to three nights capital plus four nights south. The plan absorbs that easily.
Should I get a driver or self-drive?+
Both work. Self-drive gives full flexibility, leave when you want, stop where you want, no language friction. Driver removes navigation stress and gives you a local read on the country. We can connect you to trusted partners for either. If it is your first time in West Africa and you are not used to local driving conditions, a driver makes the week smoother.
