ITINERARY 01 · LONG WEEKEND
The Long Weekend
Three nights, one island, no waste. The trip you take when you have a short window and you do not want to spend it deciding what to do.
North loop one day. South loop the next. A slow morning in the capital before the flight home. Built around what you would actually want to see, not what fills a brochure.

The Plan
One main thing per part of the day. Extras below if you want them. Move it all around to suit your weather, your energy, your mood. The plan is a suggestion, not a schedule.
When to run this trip
The trip works any three nights. The best windows are Tuesday to Friday (full access to the National Museum and roça factory tours) or Thursday to Sunday. A Friday-to-Monday run still works, just expect the museum closed on Monday and a quieter Sunday across the board. Adjust the Day 4 morning accordingly.
ARRIVAL · ONE BLOCK
Arrive Easy
TAP from Lisbon lands São Tomé in the early evening. The airport is fifteen minutes from the capital. The first night is about settling in, not seeing things.
Land, settle, walk, dinner
Customs is quick at the small single-terminal airport. Drop your bags at the hotel, shower off the flight, walk to Praça da Independência along the seafront. Dinner at any relaxed restaurant nearby. Try calulu (fish or meat stew), grilled fresh fish, or a simple plate of rice and beans with a cold Rosema beer. Early night.
IF YOUR FLIGHT IS DELAYED
TAP flights from Lisbon occasionally arrive after 9 PM. If that happens to you, skip the sunset walk and head straight to the hotel restaurant. The plan absorbs a late arrival without breaking.
THE NORTH LOOP · ~120 KM
Plantations, Snorkel, Cocoa
A full day moving counter-clockwise around the north. Sea time at midday, chocolate in the afternoon. Most of the drive is on EN1, the coastal road, well-paved with light traffic.
Lagoa Azul (~2 hrs)
The Blue Lagoon. A small cove with calm, clear water and a tiny lighthouse on the headland. Best snorkel spot on the north coast. The bay is shallow at the edge, deeper in the middle. Bring or rent gear. Go early before clouds gather and tour buses arrive.
Mucumbli (~1.5 hrs)
Cliff-top restaurant in Ponta Figo. Fresh seafood, banana bread, sea view straight to the horizon. Slow service, in the best way. If Mucumbli is full, Santola in the same area serves the best crab on the island.
Roça Diogo Vaz (~1 hr)
A working cocoa plantation that processes its own chocolate on site. You walk through the cocoa-drying yards, see the fermentation boxes, then taste the result. The most rewarding stop of the day for first-time visitors. Note: factory tours typically Mon-Sat, call ahead Sunday.
Dinner in São Tomé city
You will be hungry after the drive back through Santa Catarina Tunnel. Roça-style cuisine, fresh fish, local cocktails. The capital has a handful of strong choices, ask your hotel for the current favorite. Sleep well, the south is a longer drive.
If you have time
- →Early morning · Roça Agostinho Neto, ~1 hr, the largest plantation on the island, en route before Lagoa Azul.
- →Late afternoon · Praia das Conchas sunset swim on the drive home, ~45 min.
- →Anytime · Santa Catarina Tunnel, the only tunnel on the island, a 30-second drive-through worth photographing.
- →Anytime · Padrão de Descobrimento monument near Diogo Vaz, a 5-minute roadside stop.
- →Early morning · Praia dos Tamarinos tamarind-shaded beach, 30 minutes if you start early.
RAIN CONTINGENCY
If it rains hard in the morning, swap the order. Do Roça Diogo Vaz first (chocolate tasting is indoors), let the weather clear, then Lagoa Azul in the afternoon. Mucumbli lunch stays in the middle either way.
THE SOUTH LOOP · ~100 KM
Blowhole, Peak, Long Lunch
A shorter drive, anchored by what is arguably the best lunch on the island. The road south on EN2 hugs the east coast through fishing villages and old plantations. Take it slow.
Boca do Inferno + Pico Cão Grande (~2 hrs)
Combine two short stops. Boca do Inferno (Hell's Mouth) is a coastal blowhole, most dramatic with a swell. Then continue south to the Pico Cão Grande viewpoint near Praia Grande. The volcanic plug rises 663 metres almost vertically. Mornings give the clearest view before clouds gather.
Roça São João dos Angolares (~2 hrs)
A restored plantation house, now a roça-hotel-restaurant run by chef João Carlos Silva. Multi-course tasting menu of São Tomé ingredients. This is the highlight of the day. Booking ahead is essential, especially in high season.
Praia Jalé or Praia Inhame (~90 min)
Praia Jalé is the turtle nesting beach, peak season November to March. Praia Inhame is the palm-backed beach with calmer water year-round. Pick one based on season and mood.
Drive back, dinner in the capital
About 90 minutes back. The east-coast road in evening light is one of the better drives on the island. Stop at any roadside fishing village that catches your eye, that is the trip working.
If you have time
- →Late morning · Roça Água-Izé abandoned plantation hospital between Boca do Inferno and São João, atmospheric, ~30 min.
- →Late afternoon · Praia Pesqueira waterfall, a short detour off the road south, worth it on a hot day.
- →Late morning · Quick swim at Praia Grande near the Pico Cão Grande viewpoint, empty and wild, no facilities.
TURTLE NESTING SEASON
If you visit between October and March, Praia Jalé runs guided turtle-watching at night. The Jalé Ecolodge can arrange it. Worth staying late, or booking a night here, to see it.
CAPITAL MORNING · DEPARTURE
The Slow Final Day
Your TAP flight back to Lisbon is in the evening. You have the morning. Spend it in the capital, the place every other day skipped.
Forte de São Sebastião (~1 hr)
A 16th-century Portuguese fortress on the harbour, now the National Museum. Colonial artefacts, slave-trade history, the islands' independence story. The most important historical site in the country. Note: typically closed Mondays. If your Day 4 lands on Monday, swap with the chocolate tasting below.
Mercado Municipal (~30 min)
The main produce and fish market. Tropical fruit you cannot buy in Europe, fresh-caught fish on ice, herbs and spices, women in traditional pano cloth. A walk-through, not a long visit. Buy something small to bring home.
Last lunch in the capital (~1 hr)
Choose something you have not eaten yet. Calulu, izaquente (cocoa-based dish), or grilled lobster if it is on. The capital has the best variety of restaurants on the island.
Transfer to the airport
TAP back to Lisbon departs São Tomé around 10 PM. Arrive at the airport two hours early. The international terminal is small and slow. Buy a last passion fruit juice in the departures hall.
If you have time
- →Morning · Cloçon Téla Chocolate tasting workshop, a strong Day 4 alternative when the museum is closed.
- →Late morning · Sé Cathedral, a 5-minute stop between the fortress and the market.
- →Anytime · CACAU Cultural Hub, a small art space worth 20 minutes if open.
- →Afternoon · Praia das Conchas for a final swim, 45 minutes from the airport.

Getting Around
São Tomé is easy to drive. Roads are simple, traffic is light, signs are clear. You drive on the right. A 4×4 is recommended but not essential.
RECOMMENDED FOR THIS TRIP
Toyota Hilux 4×4
Standard 4×4 · Manual or automatic · From €70/day
Handles every road on the island including the spur road to Praia Jalé and any wet patches on the north loop. Roomy enough for two adults plus luggage. Most common rental vehicle in São Tomé.

Hire a Driver
Add a local driver for around €60-80 per day on top of the vehicle. They know the road, the stops, the lunch spots. Worth it if you want the driving to be someone else's job. Drivers double as informal guides.
Message on WhatsApp →QUICK DRIVING NOTES
- →Drive on the right, EU-style licenses accepted.
- →Petrol stations are common in the capital, sparse on the loops. Fill up before each day.
- →Speeds are slow, 40-60 km/h on most roads. The 120 km north loop takes 2.5-3 hours of pure driving time.
- →GPS works but offline maps are safer (Maps.me, Google Maps offline).
EXTRA EXPERIENCES
Tours and Excursions
Three add-ons if you want one experience-led day inside your three nights. Pick one, not all three. The trip works without any of these.
CHOCOLATE
Cocoa-to-Chocolate Tasting Tour
Any day, ~3 hours
Visit a working plantation, walk through the fermentation and drying yards, taste the chocolate at the end. The defining cultural experience of São Tomé.

QUESTIONS · ANSWERED
About This Trip
Is three nights enough for São Tomé?+
Three nights is tight but workable for São Tomé Island alone. You will see São Tomé well, you will not see Príncipe. The Long Weekend covers the main north and south loops, the capital, and one beach. If you can stretch to five or seven nights, the Classic Week or Roça Hopper unlock more depth.
Does this trip work on weekdays or only weekends?+
It works any three nights. Weekday windows (Tuesday to Friday) actually give you the most access: the National Museum is open, factory tours at the roças run their normal schedules, and the Mercado Municipal is at its busiest and most local. A Friday-to-Monday window also works, with two adjustments: the National Museum is typically closed Monday, and Sunday is quieter across the island. We have built the Day 4 plan to swap accordingly.
Can I do this trip without a 4×4?+
Most of the route is on paved roads in good condition and a standard car will manage. We still recommend a 4×4 for two reasons. Rural roads can develop ruts after rain, and the small spur road to Praia Jalé is rough. The price difference between a compact and a 4×4 in São Tomé is small.
What if it rains during my long weekend?+
São Tomé rain is usually short, intense, and tropical, not all-day. The plan still works in wet weather. If a stop is washed out, switch to plan B for that slot: chocolate tasting at Cloçon Téla, the National Museum, or a longer lunch at Roça São João. The two roça lunches in the plan are sheltered and easily extended.
Can I add a day trip to Príncipe?+
Technically yes, practically no. Príncipe is a 30-minute flight from São Tomé but flights are once or twice daily and the smallest plane fills fast. A Príncipe day trip without overnighting costs more than it is worth and you will miss the island slow pace. If Príncipe matters to you, choose Both Islands Slow (ten nights) or extend this trip by at least two nights.
Should I hire a driver or self-drive?+
Self-drive is straightforward in São Tomé. Roads are simple, traffic is light, signs are clear. The trade-off is the driving itself, about three hours behind the wheel on Day 2 and Day 3. If you prefer the driving to be someone else's job and want a local who can stop the car for a viewpoint you would otherwise miss, hire a driver. We can arrange both.
What time do TAP flights from Lisbon arrive and depart?+
TAP Portugal operates the main route from Lisbon. Flights arrive São Tomé in the late afternoon or early evening, around 5-7 PM. Departures back to Lisbon are typically late evening, around 10 PM. This means your Day 1 is an arrival-only day and your Day 4 has a full morning before the evening flight. The itinerary is built around these times.
Can I do the south loop on Day 2 and the north on Day 3?+
Yes. The order is suggested, not fixed. We put the north first because Lagoa Azul is best in the morning before clouds gather, and Roça Diogo Vaz fits an afternoon. The south loop has a long lunch at its centre which anchors the day either way. Swap freely.
