ABOUT THE HOTEL

Praia Inhame Eco Lodge: São Tomé's Wild South Coast Sanctuary

Praia Inhame Eco Lodge sits on São Tomé’s southern tip near the fishing village of Porto Alegre, directly on Praia Inhame, widely considered the most beautiful beach on São Tomé. The property is a collection of 14 wooden chalets in a range of sizes (T0 studios for couples through T2 family chalets sleeping six), nestled into the forest with private balconies opening straight onto the beach.

Praia Inhame is a genuine off-grid operation, solar panels, a wind turbine, and a wood-chip burner provide all electricity and hot water. Much of the food in the open-sided beachfront restaurant is grown on-site or sourced from local fishermen. Between November and March, the beach is a primary marine turtle nesting site, and staff will wake you if turtles arrive overnight. The lodge is also the natural base for day trips to Ilhéu das Rolas (5 minutes by boat from Porto Alegre), the small island that sits directly on the equator with a marker monument.

Insider Tip from São Tomé Life

Time your stay for November to March if turtle watching is a priority, this is the peak nesting season and Praia Inhame is one of the best places in the world to see it. The lodge is 1h40 from São Tomé airport, so plan a 3-4 night minimum to make the transfer worthwhile. Set expectations honestly: rustic accommodations, no AC (just fans + mosquito nets), and ‘leve-leve’ island service. Bring patience and you’ll have one of the trip’s best memories.

Praia Inhame Location & How to Get There

Praia Inhame Eco Lodge sits on the southern tip of São Tomé Island, near Porto Alegre, about as far from the airport as you can go on the island. The location is intentional: this is the wildest, least-developed coastline on São Tomé, with empty beaches, fishing villages, and access to the equator-line island of Ilhéu das Rolas.

Distance from key locations:

  • São Tomé International Airport (TMS): ~80 km (~1 hour 40 minutes by car)
  • São Tomé city center: ~75 km (~1 hour 30 minutes)
  • Porto Alegre fishing village: 5 minutes
  • Ilhéu das Rolas (equator marker island): 5-10 minutes by boat from Porto Alegre
  • Praia Jalé (sister beach + Jalé Ecolodge): ~3 km
  • Pico Cão Grande hike trailhead: ~30 minutes

Message São Tomé Life and we can sort a rental car or an airport pickup; taxis from this side of the island can be unreliable and the journey is long. Allow buffer time both ways.

Praia Inhame Eco Lodge: Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Praia Inhame from São Tomé airport?

Praia Inhame is approximately 80 km from São Tomé International Airport (TMS), about a 1 hour 40 minute drive south. Message São Tomé Life and we can sort a rental car or an airport pickup, as taxis on this side of the island are unreliable. Plan a 3-night minimum stay to make the long transfer worthwhile.

When can I see turtles nesting at Praia Inhame?

Marine turtle nesting season at Praia Inhame runs November to March, peaking December-February. The beach in front of the lodge is a primary nesting site for green sea turtles and hawksbill turtles. Staff monitor the beach overnight and will wake guests if turtles arrive, just ask at check-in. Hatchlings emerge from January to May. This is one of the best places in West Africa to observe sea turtle nesting in a low-impact, conservation-focused setting.

Is Praia Inhame Eco Lodge really off-grid?

Yes, Praia Inhame is genuinely self-sufficient and off-grid. Electricity comes from solar panels and a wind turbine; hot water comes from a wood-chip burner; food is largely grown in the on-site organic gardens or sourced from local fishermen. What this means for guests: rooms have no air conditioning (just ceiling fans + provided mosquito nets), WiFi is available only in the restaurant area, and electricity may be limited at certain times. Bring earplugs if you’re a light sleeper (roosters), and be ready to disconnect.

What activities does Praia Inhame offer?

Praia Inhame’s tour desk arranges a wide range of activities: surf lessons, diving, snorkeling, sport fishing, whale watching (June-October), turtle watching (Nov-March), guided rainforest hikes (including a trek to a disused Soviet-era wireless station), mountain biking, mangrove canoe trips, and day trips to Ilhéu das Rolas (the equator-line island, 5-10 min by boat from Porto Alegre). Birdwatching from the property itself is excellent, waxbills, whydahs, parrots, and kingfishers are regular visitors.
