Why visit

The easiest swim within 25 minutes of São Tomé city

Praia dos Tamarinos is a small, golden-sand beach in Guadalupe, on São Tomé’s north coast, about 20–25 minutes from the capital on fully paved roads. It is the practical answer to a real traveller question: where can my family swim today without renting a 4WD or driving for two hours?

It is not the most beautiful beach on the island. It is not the most photographed. It is, however, the most reliable: calm sheltered water, family-friendly conditions, paved access, and EcoResort right behind the beach for food and a base. For families with young children, for travellers on a tight schedule, or for anyone whose Conchas day-trip got rained off, Tamarinos is the answer.

What it’s like

A reliable family beach without the drive

The sand at Praia dos Tamarinos is the colour of pale honey, mixed with a fine darker grain that gives it a soft mottled look. The water sits in the cove almost flat, sheltered by the geography, rarely rough, and the bottom shelves gently enough that small children can stand in it comfortably. There is almost always a fisherman’s boat pulled up at one end.

The beach borrows its name from the tamarind trees in the village behind it, and shares its name with one of the closest hotels, the EcoResort at Praia dos Tamarinos. It pays to be precise when asking directions.

The atmosphere is local. Weekdays are quiet, perhaps a fisherman, a family from Guadalupe, the occasional swimmer from EcoResort. Weekends bring São Tomé city families with picnics; expect light crowds Saturday and Sunday from late morning. There is no bar, no parasol rental, no shop on the sand. EcoResort can sell you a drink and a meal if you book ahead. The beach itself you bring everything to.

Plan your visit

Everything you need to know before you go

How to get there

From São Tomé city, drive 20–25 minutes north on the EN1 coastal road through Guadalupe. The beach is signposted from the main road, with paved access all the way. Any 2WD car works, no rough track required. Taxis from the capital typically charge €12–20 each way. EcoResort sits directly behind the beach and is the easiest landmark to ask for.

When to go

The dry season (June to September) is most reliable, with the short dry season (mid-December to mid-February) also excellent. Weekday mornings are quietest. Avoid Saturday and Sunday after 11 am if you want the beach mostly to yourself, those are when São Tomé families arrive with coolers. Late afternoons (after 4 pm) are calm and golden-light.

What to bring

Treat it as a no-facilities beach. Pack drinking water, snacks or lunch, sunscreen, an umbrella or sarong for shade (the natural shade is sparse), and mosquito repellent for dawn or dusk. EcoResort can sell food and drinks if you book ahead. Cash for taxis and any EcoResort purchase. Children should swim in the centre of the cove where conditions are gentlest.

What to expect

A modest, friendly, family-suitable beach with calm water and an easy paved approach. Don’t expect Banana-grade scenery, Tamarinos is about practicality, not postcards. Half-day visits (3–4 hours) are typical. For longer stays, EcoResort is the closest accommodation.

Insider Tip from São Tomé Life

Praia dos Tamarinos pairs naturally with the North Coast Day as a soft-launch alternative to Praia das Conchas, better for young children or travellers without a 4WD. Combine a Tamarinos morning swim with a lunch and afternoon at Lagoa Azul (15 min east) and Roça Diogo Vaz (30 min west). Stay at EcoResort if you want morning beach access without the city drive.
