Why visit

São Tomé's most accessible surf and dive base

Praia Inhame is the south coast’s working beach, not a postcard cove like Banana, not a quiet half-day like Conchas. It is a black-sand stretch with real surf, a PADI dive centre on site, and an off-grid eco lodge that uses solar and wind for power. It runs at the pace of a small surf town: dawn for waves, midday for lunch, afternoon for diving, evening for stars.

What makes Inhame valuable is what it is not: not crowded, not commercialised, not casual. This is a beach for travellers who do things, surf, dive, snorkel, walk. If your São Tomé trip is more active than scenic, Inhame deserves a night or two.

What it’s like

A beach with a working rhythm

The sand at Inhame is darker than Conchas, finer than Jalé, a soft volcanic charcoal that drags warm against your feet. The waves break clean along the beach in 1-to-2-metre sets through the dry season, and there is almost always someone in the water: surfers at dawn, divers loading the boat by 9 am, snorkellers in the shallows by 11.

Praia Inhame Eco Lodge runs the beach without controlling it. The lodge sits in a coconut grove a few metres up from the sand, runs entirely on solar and wind, and treats sustainability as the brief rather than the marketing. The PADI centre takes guests out to dive sites along this coast and around Ilhéu das Rolas. The kitchen does fresh fish lunches that are worth lingering over.

This is not a beach for non-swimmers or for travellers who want a parasol and a cocktail menu. The whole point is the activity: morning surf, midday dive, afternoon snorkel, evening Atlantic sunset. Children swim in the shallows near the lodge but parents should watch the conditions. The sand is hot at midday, the coconut grove is your shade.

Plan your visit

Everything you need to know before you go

How to get there

Praia Inhame is in the Porto Alegre area at São Tomé’s southern tip, about 1h 40min by car from São Tomé city (around 100 km). The first 80 km are paved; the final stretch is rougher and slower. Praia Inhame Eco Lodge can arrange transfers from São Tomé airport (€80–120 each way, advance booking required). 4WD recommended in the wet season.

When to go

The dry season (June to September) has the most consistent surf and clearest dive conditions. The short dry season (mid-December to mid-February) is also good. Swell is generally largest June to October. For diving, water visibility peaks January and February. Mornings before 10 am are the surfer’s hour; midday is for diving and lunch.

What to bring

If you surf, bring your own board, rentals are limited on the south coast. Reef-safe sunscreen is essential. Bring a dry-bag, rash guard, mosquito repellent for dawn/dusk, and reasonable footwear. The lodge provides snorkel and basic dive gear for guests. Cash only beyond the lodge, no nearby ATMs.

What to expect

A working surf-and-dive beach with a single off-grid eco lodge as your base. Quiet, active, and not luxurious. Most stays are 2–3 nights to give time for both surf and dive sessions. The lodge handles food, gear and logistics so you focus on the water.

Insider Tip from São Tomé Life

Praia Inhame anchors the morning of the Southern Wilderness Day, São Tomé’s deep-south circuit. After a dawn surf or morning dive, drive 45 minutes north for the celebrated lunch at Roça São João dos Angolares with Chef João Carlos Silva, then continue to Praia Jalé for the after-dark turtle nesting tour (Sep–Apr). Stay at Praia Inhame Eco Lodge for diving and surf access; switch to Jalé Ecolodge for the nesting night.
