DAY BY DAY

The Plan

Eleven days, two islands, one rhythm. The first five build through São Tomé from capital to plantation coast. The middle day is the flight to Príncipe. The last five settle into the slower island. Each card has one main thing per part of the day. Move it around to suit your weather, your energy, your mood.

When to run this trip

Best windows are June through September (long dry season) or December through February (short dry season). Book the Roça São João lunch on a weekday. Book the inter-island flight to Príncipe as soon as your dates are locked, flights fill up. We can coordinate both. Whale watching offshore Príncipe peaks July to October.

01

ARRIVAL · SÃO TOMÉ EVENING

Arrive Easy

TAP from Lisbon lands São Tomé in the early evening. The airport is fifteen minutes from the capital. The first night is about settling in, not seeing things. Ten days unfold from tomorrow.

EVENING

Land, settle, walk, dinner

Customs is quick at the small single-terminal airport. Drop your bags at the hotel, shower off the flight, walk to Praça da Independência along the seafront. Easy dinner at any relaxed restaurant nearby. Calulu, grilled fish, a cold beer. Early night.

IF YOUR FLIGHT IS DELAYED

TAP from Lisbon occasionally arrives after 9 PM. If that happens, skip the walk and head straight to the hotel. The week absorbs a late arrival without breaking.

02

SÃO TOMÉ · CAPITAL + PLANTATION

Capital Walking + Monte Café

Capital in the morning while the light is soft. Lunch in town. Afternoon at Roça Monte Café for the cocoa story. Back to the capital for an easy evening.

MORNING

Old town, Praça da Independência, the cathedral, Mercado Municipal, then up to Forte de São Sebastião for the National Museum. Doable on foot. Bring water.

MIDDAY

Lunch in the capital (~1 hr)

Pirata or Vila do Mar for sit-down. Or the seafood carts near the seafront for quick.

AFTERNOON

Roça Monte Café (~3 hrs incl. drive)

Drive 40 minutes into the interior hills. The most photogenic plantation on the island, cocoa-drying yards, the old factory, mountain views. A working roça with deep history.

The Blue Lagoon. Best snorkel spot on the north coast. Bring or rent gear. Go early before clouds gather and tour buses arrive.

MIDDAY

Praia das Conchas (~1.5 hrs)

Shell beach with calm bay, informal lunch from beachside grills. The kind of beach lunch you remember.

MORNING

Check out, drive south (~2 hrs)

Coastal road south past Praia Emília. Stop where it pleases you. The road follows the water most of the way.

MIDDAY

Lunch en route (~1 hr)

Beachside lodge or a roadside grill. Slow pace, you have time today.

EVENING

Settle in at the south base, dinner on site

Most south properties do dinner on site. Check in, unpack, eat where you sleep.

ROAD CONDITIONS

The east coast road south is paved but narrower than the north. Allow more time than the map suggests. A 4×4 handles the spur road to the south better than a compact.

Last morning on the São Tomé side. Easy. The Príncipe flight is usually early afternoon. Hand-luggage only on the small plane (12-19 seats), check luggage policies vary.

Príncipe mornings are unhurried. Coffee on the terrace, a walk, a swim. The Praia Banana boat usually leaves mid-morning.

MIDDAY

Short drive across the island to the main plantation site. Most properties arrange transport.

MORNING

Drive to Praia Grande or Praia Macaco (~30 min)

Most Príncipe properties arrange the transport. The west coast beaches are bigger and emptier than Banana.

MIDDAY

Beach time + snorkeling on the reef (~3 hrs)

Príncipe has some of the best snorkeling in the Gulf of Guinea. The reefs are intact, the fish are abundant. Gear comes from the property.

AFTERNOON

Lunch at the beach or back at the property (~1.5 hrs)

Many beach days end with lunch at a roadside place; some properties pack a beach lunch.

EVENING

Property dinner + slow evening

Sun-tired. Quiet night.

WHALE WATCHING (Jul-Oct)

Príncipe's offshore waters are on the humpback whale migration route. July through October sees regular sightings from the beaches and boats. If you visit in this window, ask the property about a dedicated whale-watching boat trip.

10

If the Day 7 boat to Praia Banana was rained out, Day 10 is the backup. Property organises the boat. Same day structure as Day 7.

São Tomé side needs wheels, Príncipe side does not. On São Tomé we lean driver for this trip, given the pace and the cultural focus.

SÃO TOMÉ · RECOMMENDED

Hire a Driver

~€60-80/day on top of vehicle · 5 days

A local driver doubles as informal guide, knows the back roads, the plantation families, the unofficial lunch stops. Frees your attention for the country. The right pick for a culturally-focused ten-night trip.

BEFORE YOU GO

Practical Notes

Currency

Dobra (STN). Euros widely accepted at the roças and major hotels on both islands. Cards work at major hotels and at Roça São João and Sundy Praia; cash for everything else. Withdraw enough in the capital for the Príncipe portion, ATMs are limited on Príncipe.

Language

Portuguese is official on both islands. Forro creole on São Tomé, a slightly different creole on Príncipe. English at the Príncipe luxury and São Tomé roça properties, limited elsewhere. A few Portuguese phrases (bom dia, obrigado, com licença) go a long way.

Visa

Visa-free 15 days for most EU, US, UK, Schengen passport holders. Ten nights falls comfortably inside the visa-free window. E-visa for longer trips.

Voltage

220V, type C and F plugs (standard European). Bring an adapter from US, UK, or Australia.

Water

Tap water is not safe to drink on either island. Bottled water everywhere, around €0.50 per litre. Resorts and the Príncipe luxury properties supply filtered water for guests.

Mobile data

CST Telecom or Unitel SIM at the São Tomé airport, around €10 for the trip. Alternative: Airalo eSIM before arrival. Signal is good in São Tomé capital, decent on the plantations, patchier on Príncipe, useful to know if you need to work briefly.

Tipping

Not standard, always appreciated. 5-10% at restaurants. For drivers, plantation staff, hotel staff who go above expectations, €5-10 per day or a lump sum at the end works. Round figures appreciated on Príncipe where small change is harder to manage.

QUESTIONS · ANSWERED

About This Trip

Is ten days enough for both islands?+

Yes for a proper visit to each. Five nights on São Tomé covers the capital, the north loop, the plantation south. Five nights on Príncipe covers Praia Banana, Roça Sundy, the biosphere reserve. Neither island feels rushed. If you want even slower, extend to 12 nights with an extra day on each island.

Why include Príncipe, is it really worth the inter-island flight?+

Yes. Príncipe is a different country from São Tomé in everything but politics. Smaller, slower, more untouched. UNESCO Biosphere Reserve covering the entire island. Praia Banana is the most photographed beach in the country. Travellers who do São Tomé without Príncipe almost always say they wish they had. If you have the time and the budget, include it.

How does the inter-island flight work?+

STP Airways or Africa's Connection operate São Tomé to Príncipe, around 35 minutes each way. Usually one or two flights daily. The aircraft is small (12-19 seats) and fills up, especially in peak season. Book the flight as soon as your dates are locked. We can coordinate the booking when you message us. Round-trip is around €260-320 per person depending on the season.

What if Príncipe weather is bad during my visit?+

Príncipe gets more rain than São Tomé even in the dry season. Most rain is short and tropical, not all-day. The roça properties (Sundy Praia, Belo Monte, Roça Sundy) all have indoor common spaces. Bom Bom has its restaurant pier. The biosphere hikes can be rescheduled. The plantation tours run rain or shine. Weather rarely derails the trip, it just rearranges the day.

How is Príncipe different from São Tomé?+

Smaller, quieter, greener, more remote. Príncipe has under 8,000 people; São Tomé over 200,000. Príncipe has one road, one town (Santo António), and a handful of luxury and boutique stays. São Tomé has the capital, the airport, the markets, the multiple plantations spread across the island. Both islands grow cocoa but Príncipe leans more rainforest, São Tomé more coastline. You will feel the pace shift the moment you land on Príncipe.

What is the best hotel choice on Príncipe?+

Depends on character. Sundy Praia is the high-end pick, tented luxury in the rainforest, beach access, the only property at this level on the island. Bom Bom Island Resort sits on its own islet connected by causeway, two beaches either side, classic resort feel. Belo Monte is heritage boutique in a restored plantation building on the cliff. Roça Sundy is the working plantation experience, less polished but more authentic. We can match the right property to how you want Príncipe to feel.

Should I self-drive or get a driver, and does that change between the islands?+

São Tomé side: self-drive or driver both work; we lean driver for this trip given the pace. Príncipe side: you don't need a vehicle. The island is small enough that hotel-arranged transport covers everything. Most properties include or organise day-trip transport. You can rent on Príncipe but it is overkill for a five-night stay.

What if I want even slower, 12 or 14 nights?+

Easy to extend. The natural additions: extra nights at Roça São João (depth on the plantation side), extra nights at the Príncipe property, or a third destination night in a São Tomé north-coast eco-lodge like Mucumbli. Tell us what kind of slowness you want, beach-slow, plantation-slow, or rainforest-slow, and we will shape the extra nights.
