The most photographed beach in Africa
If there is one image of Príncipe Island that travels the world, it is Praia Banana, a perfect crescent of golden sand framed by leaning palms, opening onto water so clear you can see your shadow on the seabed. The 1989 Bacardi rum television advert was filmed here. So were countless magazine covers since. It is, by some measures, the most photographed beach in Africa.
The reality is even better than the picture. The cove is genuinely tiny, perhaps 150 metres end to end, which is what gives it that intimate, postcard-perfect feel. The water is sheltered enough for an easy swim. And because Praia Banana sits inside the grounds of Belo Monte plantation hotel, it has never been overdeveloped: no beach bar pumping music, no parasol rental hawkers, no concrete. Just sand, palms, and a single restaurant up the hill.
What it’s like
A cove that runs on a 9-to-4 clock
The path down from Belo Monte drops you onto sand the colour of pale gold, soft as flour. The palms lean out over the water as if posed for a camera. The sea is a blue so saturated it looks unreal in photographs, and in real life, somehow, more so. There is almost always birdsong, sometimes a distant boat engine, and the slow heartbeat of small waves on the curve of the cove.
Praia Banana operates on two clocks. Before 11 am and after 3 pm, it can feel like a private beach, just you, perhaps a couple from Belo Monte, the palms, the water. Between 11 and 3, day-trip boats from São Tomé Island and tour groups from Santo António arrive: maybe 20 to 40 people on the sand at peak, eating lunch up at the restaurant, snorkelling in the shallows. It is never crowded by Mediterranean standards. But it is no longer empty.
The lesson is simple: go early or stay late. Belo Monte guests have the privilege of waking up above the beach and walking down before anyone arrives. Day visitors can time their arrival for 9 am or 4 pm to land in the quiet windows. The midday hours have their own appeal, the social scene, the lunch, the energy, but the beach as a place of solitude lives in the edges of the day.

How to get there
Praia Banana is on the grounds of Belo Monte hotel, on Príncipe Island’s southwestern coast. There are three access routes: (1) stay at Belo Monte and walk down, the easiest path; (2) day visit with lunch at the Belo Monte restaurant, which usually includes beach access, book ahead; (3) day-trip boat tour from São Tomé Island, which lands on the beach itself. Belo Monte is roughly 20 minutes by car from Santo António, Príncipe’s main town. There is no public road that reaches the beach.
When to go
The dry season (June to September) has the calmest, clearest water and the most reliable boat-tour operations. The short dry season (mid-December to mid-February) is also excellent. Within any day, aim for before 11 am or after 3 pm to dodge the day-trip arrival window. Sunrise visits (for guests of Belo Monte) are exceptional.
What to bring
A snorkel mask is the most-rewarded item, the rocky edges of the cove have surprisingly active reef life in the shallows. Bring reef-safe sunscreen (the cove is small and reef-fringed), a hat, and a sarong. Belo Monte handles food and drinks, so you don’t need to pack lunch. Cash for the access fee if you’re a day visitor, confirm the current rate at booking.

Belo Monte controls access, which keeps the beach pristine and protects the experience. Half-day visits (3–5 hours including lunch) are typical for day visitors; hotel guests often stay much longer.
Praia Banana anchors the midday of the South Príncipe Day, the island’s most rewarding day-loop. Start with snorkelling at Bom Bom (15 min north, reef life in the shallows), arrive at Banana before 11 am for the empty window, lunch at Belo Monte, then finish at Roça Sundy for the Einstein 1919 eclipse plantation tour. Booking accommodation at Belo Monte is the only way to guarantee unhurried beach access, the day visitors leave at sundown.
