Why It Matters

One of São Tomé's best easily-accessible snorkeling spots.

Most quality snorkeling in São Tomé requires boats or remote beach access. Lagoa Azul is the exception, a sheltered cove with clear water and reef life visible in the shallows, reachable directly from the main north-coast road. For travelers who want underwater experience without organizing a boat charter, it’s the obvious choice.

What is Lagoa Azul?

Lagoa Azul (“Blue Lagoon”) is a small, sheltered cove on São Tomé’s northern coast known for its clear water and gentle conditions, one of the best easily-accessible snorkeling spots on the island.

The cove sits between volcanic rock formations, with shallow reef life accessible just off the shoreline. The water clarity in good conditions produces the bright turquoise color that gives the lagoon its name.

Lagoa Azul is one of three sites that anchor the classic north-coast day trip: Praia dos Tamarindos (golden-sand beach), Lagoa Azul (snorkeling), and Roça Diogo Vaz (chocolate plantation). The three combine into a satisfying full-day experience accessible from São Tomé city.

How to visit Lagoa Azul

How to get there

Lagoa Azul is on São Tomé’s northern coast, approximately 20-25 km from São Tomé city, or about 30-35 minutes by car via paved roads through Guadalupe. The lagoon is signed from the main road and has parking nearby.

When to go

Dry season (June-September) for the calmest water and clearest visibility, essential for good snorkeling. Even in dry season, check conditions on the day. Mornings are best, calmer water and better light underwater. Avoid days following major storms when visibility may be reduced.

What to bring

Snorkel gear (bring your own, rental availability is unreliable), reef-safe sunscreen, water and snacks (no significant infrastructure on site), towel and dry clothes, an underwater camera, and cash for any local snack stands. Entry/exit from the water is partly over rock, water shoes help.

What to expect

A small cove with excellent water clarity in good conditions, reef fish visible in the shallows, and minimal infrastructure. The shoreline is partly rocky, entering and exiting the water requires care. Once in the water, the snorkeling is among the best of the easily-accessible São Tomé sites. Expect a 1-2 hour stop rather than a full beach day.

Insider Tip from São Tomé Life

Bring your own snorkel gear if at all possible, São Tomé rental availability is unreliable, and you’ll regret arriving empty-handed. Combine Lagoa Azul with Praia dos Tamarindos (~10 min away) and Roça Diogo Vaz (~30 min) for the classic north-coast day. Stay at EcoResorTamarino or Mucumbli if you want morning snorkel access without the drive from the city.
