The single most photographed beach in São Tomé and Príncipe. A perfect arc of white sand pressed against jungle, with calm, glass-clear water on the inside curve. Reachable by boat or short hike from Bom Bom Island Resort. Quiet on weekday mornings, more visitors after lunch.
02 · SOUTHERN SÃO TOMÉ
Praia Jalé
The turtle beach. Where the south stays wild.
A long, wild Atlantic beach on the south coast where four species of sea turtle come ashore to nest between November and March. Stronger Atlantic currents in rainy months mean swim with caution. Jalé Ecolodge sits at the back, the only built structure on the bay.

Praia Inhame
The quiet luxe of the south coast.
A long curve of palm-backed sand at the island's southern tip. Praia Inhame Hotel sits behind the beach, but the sand itself is wide open. Calm in the dry season, more dramatic in rains. Often empty even in peak months.
04 · EASTERN SÃO TOMÉ
Praia dos Tamarindos
A local favorite. Where the city goes on Sundays.
Just east of São Tomé city, Tamarindos is where locals gather on weekends. Calmer than the south coast beaches and easy to reach by taxi. Limited shade, so come early or late. Best paired with a stop at Roça Água-Izé on the way back.

Praia Banana on Príncipe is the most iconic, a postcard-perfect crescent often featured in the country's tourism imagery. For wildness and turtle nesting, Praia Jalé on southern São Tomé is unmatched. Each beach has its own personality.
Are the beaches safe for swimming?+
Most beaches are calm and swimmable year-round. Praia Banana and Praia Inhame are generally safe for families. Some southern beaches like Praia Jalé have stronger Atlantic currents, especially during the rainy season. We note swim safety on each individual beach page.
When do turtles nest on São Tomé beaches?+
Sea turtle nesting season runs November through March, with Praia Jalé being the most active site. Several conservation organizations run nighttime nesting tours during this window. Praia Inhame and a handful of southern beaches also see nesting activity.
How do I get to Praia Banana on Príncipe?+
Praia Banana is on Príncipe's northern coast, accessible by boat from Bom Bom Island Resort or via a short hike from the nearest road. Most visitors reach it as a guided excursion from one of the Príncipe resorts. It's also reachable independently with a local driver and a short walk.
Are the beaches public or private?+
Nearly all beaches in São Tomé and Príncipe are public. Some are backed by hotels or eco-lodges, but the sand itself is always accessible. There are no beach entry fees.
What should I bring to a São Tomé beach?+
Most beaches have no facilities, so bring water, snacks, sunscreen, a hat, and reef-safe products. Some beaches have nearby restaurants (Praia Inhame), but most southern and Príncipe beaches are wild. Mosquito repellent is useful at dawn or dusk.
